West Texas: Top 2010

Odessa High quarterback Derrick Teegarden and Monahans defensive end Trevor Owens debut as the top seniors entering the 2009 Texas High School football season from the West region of the state.

Teegarden is the site's Class 5A/4A top player in WTX after finishing up a terrific junior season. The 6-1, 175-pound quarterback led the Bronchos to a 9-3 season and a berth in the area finals. He passed for 2,225 yards while rushing for 743 yards and accounted for 34 total touchdowns. He also has trimmed down his 40-yard dash time to 4.4, which makes him even more explosive in making plays with his feet entering his senior campaign.

North Texas and Texas Christian University have shown the most interest in Teegarden with the universities making personal visits to Odessa but more schools should come calling after he attends camps during the summer. Even after putting up gaudy numbers during his junior campaign, Teegarden feels he can do more his senior season.

"This will be my third year running this offense so I feel comfortable with the system and my teammates," Teegarden said. "My personal goals are to throw for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards, and, as a team, we would like to win a district championshihp and be a strong contender in the state playoffs."

Teegarden helped lead the Bronchos to the playoffs for the first time since 1997, and he has hopes to repeat that again his senior season and make more noise in the postseason. Odessa returns a strong nucleus of key performers, including all-state junior running back Bradley Marquez and senior linebacker Kody Tennison. Marquez rushed for 1,722 yards and 22 TDs and had 484 yards receiving and five scores to conclude an extraordinary sophomore season on a 9-3 playoff team.

Monahans defensive end Trevor Owens earned Defensive MVP honors in District 3-3A to cap off a strong junior year and begins the 2009 football season as the site's top WTX player in Class 3A/A.

Owens has the speed to compliment his size to be an impact player rushing off the edge. The 6-1, 205-pound defensive end runs in the 4.8 range in the 40-yard dash and creates mismatch problems for most offensive lineman that has the assignment of blocking him. Most teams will choose to double-team Owens which will allow his teammates to make more plays.

Owens posted 101 tackles with 10 tackles for a loss to go along with 22 QB hurries, six forced fumbles, five sacks and four blocked kicks. He was a key component on the Lobos 10-3 playoff squad.

WEST TEXAS 2009 CLASS 5A/4A TOP SENIORS (As compiled by Bryon Herring)

1. Derrick Teegarden, Odessa, QB, 6'1, 175, 4.4 - Passed for 2,225 yards with 24 TDs and rushed for 743 yards and 10 scores in helping the Bronchos to a 9-3 season and their first playoff appearance since 1997.

2. Chris Rhoten, Canyon, WR, 6-0, 175, 4.5 - Led the Panhandle with 76 receptions for more than 1,000 yards in helping Canyon to 6-5 playoff season.

3. Parker Bridwell, Hereford, QB, 6-3, 170, 4.8 - Threw for 2,100 yards as a junior and also averaged just under 40 yards per punt. Has excellent pocket awareness and always makes right decisions with the football.

4. Matt Ritchey, Big Spring, ATH, 6-3, 185, 4.6 - Rushed for 1,187 yards and passed for 1,069 yards while accounting for 23 TDs at quarterback. On defense, posted 93 tackles (28 solo), five TFL and two INTs at linebacker. One of the state's most productive two-way players.

5. Antwan Goodley, Midland, WR, 5-11, 190, 4.4 - Had 761 yards receiving and a school-record 11 TDs through the air. A starter since sophomore season. Committed to Baylor.

6. Bryan Seicks, Frenship, RB, 5-8, 180, 4.5 - Rushed for 1,001 yards on 173 carries and 11 TDs on regional finalist playoff team.

7. John De La Rosa, Canutillo, RB, 5-8, 155, 4.6 - Rushed for 2,025 yards and 22 TDs to earn District 2-4A Player of the Year honors on 9-2 playoff team.

8. Margarito Vasquez, Odessa Permian, OL, 6'4, 290, 5.2 - A second team all-state selection as a junior. Arguably the top lineman in WTX entering 2009 season.

9. Monte Anderson, Big Spring, RB, 5-8, 190, 4.4 - Rushed for 1,170 yards and 12 TDs despite missing three games due to injury. Has loads of potential if he could play a complete season injury free.

10. Bo Cates, Frenship, DE, 6-0, 195, 4.9 - Recorded 77 tackles, 10 TFL and three sacks to earn District 4-4A Newcomer of the Year honors as a junior.

WEST TEXAS 2009 CLASS 3A/A TOP SENIORS

1. Trevor Owens, Monahans, DE, 6-1, 205, 4.8 - Notched 101 tackles, 22 QB hurries, 10 TFL, six FFs, five sacks and four blocked kicks to earn District 3-3A Defensive MVP honors. The premier defensive player in WTX in any classification..

2. Brandon Robinson, Canadian, QB, 5-11, 185, 4.6 - First team all-state by the Texas Sportswriters Association on state championship team. A natural leader who has yet to fulfill his potential.

3. Kenneth Norman, Sweetwater, DB, 5-10, 165, 4.6 - Compiled 111 tackles, eight pass break-ups, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one INT on 3A playoff team. Expect those numbers to rise during senior season.

4. Case McCoy, Graham, QB, 6-2, 180, 4.6 - Has thrown for 4,234 yards and 39 TDs over the last two seasons. Bigger than his brother with a stronger arm at the same age. Committed to University of Texas.

5. Colton Wilson, Sunray, RB, 5-7, 145, 4.9 - Rushed for over 1,800 yards during junior season to help Sunray reach the regional finals.

6. Elijah Hudson, Albany, RB/DB, 5-10, 175, 4.7 - Recorded 29 solo tackles with 72 assists and two sacks. Rushed for over 200 yards each in three playoff games that ended in the state semifinals. A workhorse in the 2008 playoffs at running back.

7. Weston Williams, Wellington, QB, 6-2, 180, 4.5 - Perhaps the best dual threat QB in WTX. Led the Skyrockets to a 11-1 record. The best kept secret in WTX.

8. Dillion Dees, Iraan, OL, 6-1, 230, 4.9 - Recorded 105 knockdowns, 68 pancakes and graded at 85 percent to earn first team all-state honors on a team that won 13 games.

9. Garrison Williams, Roscoe, WR, 6-0, 185, 4.7 - Caught 38 passes for 774 yards and 5 TDs on 10-2 playoff team.

10. Austin Bamert, Muleshoe, OL, 6-0, 195, 4.9 - Recorded 44 knockdowns, 11 chop blocks and graded at 92 percent to garner all-state accolades on 2A DI state champions.
