Waco University Hangs on to Advance

MIDLOTHIAN- When two evenly matched teams get together for a playoff game it's typically the little things that make the difference and in Saturday's Class 4A Region II Division II bi-district clash between Waco University (7-4) and Terrell (8-3) it was the kicking game that proved to be much bigger than simply a little thing.
Terrell missed two extra point kicks and a field goal and that proved to be the difference in a 13-12 win for Waco University at Midlothian ISD Stadium. The win for the Trojans is their first in the postseason since 2002, next week Waco University takes on defending Class 4A Division II State Champion Sulphur Springs Friday at 7pm in Corsicana.

Randy Price paced the University offense with 234 total yards and RB Gerrell Griffin scored both UHS touchdowns and tallied 66 yards rushing. The key plays for Price came in the fourth quarter with University nursing a one point lead Price was able to melt away nearly four minutes of clock including two third and long conversions to Alton Montgomery. Waco Unversity did not score on the drive but they managed to pin Terrell on their own 11 with just 1:46 left.
The University defense held Terrell at midfield and they were able to kneel twice to run out the clock and escape with the win. University came out and with a solid mix of pass and run took a 7-0 lead on Griffin's first run from a yard out, UHS would never trail for the remainder of the game.
Terrell cut the lead to 7-6 in the second quarter on a Jaylon Kennedy two yard run. The drive was an 80 yard journey set up by a fourth and goal fumble recovery by Terrell LB L.B. Williams. University jumped ahead 13-6 in the third quarter on Griffin's second scoring run from a yard out. Terrell would have an answer on the ensuing drive to keep it interesting as Kennedy got his second touchdown run of the day cutting the lead to 13-12.
