The Victoria school district should have a new athletic director before the end of the week.

Bob Moore, superintendent of the school district, said he expects to bring a recommendation to the board of trustees at a specially called meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The athletic director will take the place of Memorial head football coach Mickey Finley, who announced in December he would step down from the position to continue coaching.

Finley expressed a desire to become the head football coach at Victoria East, which along with Victoria West will open in the upcoming school year.

The head coaching positions will be filled after an athletic director is hired, Moore said

The Advocate filed a Freedom of Information request with the school district and obtained the names of the 17 applicants for the athletic director's position and the 49 applicants for the head coaching positions. The applications were received as of Friday.

Ralph Escalona, the Victoria school district's assistant athletic director, is among three applicants for the athletic director's position currently employed by the district.

Memorial boys head basketball coach John Grammer and Abbie Barnett, an assistant principal, also applied. Barnett played football at Cuero and Sam Houston State.

Kyle Taylor, who was the offensive coordinator at Memorial for the 2008 season and is currently coaching at Hallettsville, applied for the athletic director and head coaching positions.

Leonard McAngus, who was the offensive coordinator at Victoria High under Mark Reeve and the athletic director and head football coach at Gonzales before starting the Justin Northwest athletic program, applied for the athletic director and head coaching positions. McAngus is currently working in administration at Justin Northwest.

Former Yoakum athletic director and head football coach Jessie Crow, who is currently the athletic director for the Brazosport school district, applied for athletic director's position.

The athletic director's position also drew two female applicants - Vicki Nelms, the athletic director of the Los Alamos, N.M. school district and Shannon Rideout, a coach in the Fort Bend school district.

Memorial offensive coordinator David Husmann, who led Schulenburg to a pair of state championships, and Memorial assistant James McCarter applied for a head coaching position.

Cuero offensive coordinator Travis Reeve, who played quarterback and led Victoria High to the 1993 semifinals, applied for the head coaching position along with Cuero graduate Adam Arroyo, who played on the Gobblers' 1987 state championship team before playing at Baylor. Arroyo is currently the athletic director and head football coach at Freer.

Other applicants include former Gonzales athletic director and head football coach Kris Micheaux.
