Some big moves this week that include Stephenville promoting hometown son, Joe Gillespie, to follow Chad Morris.
San Antonio Reagan offensive coordinator Matt Carroll has been named the new head football coach at University High School replacing longtime coach Leroy Coleman. Coleman served as head coach for 26 seasons. When Coleman took at University over Carroll was still in elementary school. University's last playoff appearance was in 2004.
Carroll is a former all-conference football player at Hardin-Simmons University and has 13 years of experience coaching in the San Antonio Independent School District. Most recently Carroll served as offensive coordinator at San Antonio Reagan. His prior eleven years were spent as an assistant at San Antonio Roosevelt. The other finalist for the position was Italy head coach Buddy Griffin.
Gillespie was the second choice behind Glen Rose's Erik Slaughter at Stephenville. Slaughter withdrew his name before the hire was complete to stay in Glen Rose.
A 1990 graduate of SHS, Gillespie has served his alma mater as an assistant coach since 1995. He coached defensive tackles for two state championship teams as a member of Art Briles' staff, moved to the secondary under Mike Copeland, then to outside linebackers under Chad Morris.
Gillespie faces challenges including replacing part of the staff that went to Lake Travis with Morris.
Tam Hollingshead left Rockwall-Heath to join June Jones at SMU. Hollingshead leaves the program he started in good shape after three years with son Drew returning for his senior season at QB.
After one year on the job, Chris Jones has resigned as La Marque's athletic director and head football coach. Jones arrived to La Marque with a lot of fanfare involving his spread offense and playoff success at Refugio where he complied a 34-14 record and won three district titles. But the results were mixed this season.
Katy Taylor's John Campbell resigned before the announced hiring at San Antonio Northside ISD's newest high school, Brandeis. Campbell returns to Northside ISD after only one season at Katy Taylor.
Below is the latest of almost 100 statewide high school head football coaching changes since the end of the 2007 regular season.
Last year, more than 175 Texas high schools changed coaches between the 2006 and '07 seasons.
