TOC Scrimmage Report: Kerrville Tivy-Boerne

BOERNE--
The Boerne Greyhounds hosted the Kerville Tivy Antlers in a scrimmage
Saturday. As expected the coach Mark Smith's Antlers, TOC #1
rated San Antonio area 4A team, dominated the 26-3A Greyhounds.
Oregon early commit QB Johnny Manziel took command of the
scrimmage early in Tivy's first offensive possession.
Manziel put
on quite a show. He ran with elusiveness, and he ran with power.
On one play he stiff-armed his way into the end zone. He created big
plays with his scrambling ability, and made all the throws you want
to see in a quarterback. He is a rare talent.
Early in the
scrimmage, the Kerrville defense intimidated the young Greyhounds.
As the scrimmage progressed Boerne became more comfortable with the
level of competition and delivered big plays on both offense and
defense. The secondary delivered bone jarring hits that knocked the
ball loose, and stopped drives. After a nice Greyhound drive late
in the scrimmage, Tyler Knop kicked a wind aided field goal of
47 yards. It would have been good from 55 yards.
After
the scrimmage Boerne Coach Dane Johnson said,
"This is a really young team, and we are probably a year away."
There are only ten seniors on the team. He said that the team was
growing from week to week and the needed leadership is emerging.
Coach Johnson cited Corey Haas
for his "leadership and hard play" in the scrimmage.
Boerne is in a tough district that includes three teams, Bandera,
Navarro and Wimberley, that were district champions last year. Coach
Johnson is optimistic that, if the improvement continues, his team
will be a surprise in district play.
Coach
Johnson explained his coaching philosophy , It starts with good
assistants. The assistants build relationships with the players. He
learned from his mentor, Bob Ledbetter
of Southlake Carroll that coaches build relationships with players,
from a relationship coaches build trust, from trust coaches build
character. Success comes from character. Building character in
players is the goal.
