In front of a crowd of a standing room only crowd of 21,776, the Allen Eagles completely dominated the Southlake Carroll Dragons making the inaugural game at the much discussed $60 million dollar Eagle Stadium an indelible memory.
Carroll, the defending Division I Class 5A champions, came into the game ranked as the top preseason team in Texas and carried a 5-0 all-time record against the Eagles, but left wondering what took place after the 24-0 loss.
According to the research provided by TheOldCoach.com's Matt Diggs, it was the first shut out of Carroll since Newman Smith accomplished the task in 1997.
The Allen defensive front seven stopped Carroll's Kenny Hill from establishing a Dragon ground game and held Carroll to 290 total yards, forcing six punts and recovered two fumbles.
Behind the stadium, the second often debated topic during the offseason in Allen was the move of Oliver Pierce from wide-out to quarterback. Pierce has been the backup for the past two seasons and earned the position based on his leadership and athletic skills. Pierce played well in his first official start, throwing four passes and completing them all, and he carried the ball 14 times for 54 yards and a touchdown.
The Eagles were leading 14-0 when Pierce left the game on the kickoff return to start the second half with cramps. Sophomore backup Kyler Murray continued the attack on Carroll's young defense behind an effective combination of passing and running. Murray completed eight of 14 passes for 154 yards. Senior wide receiver Troy Knudsen stepped up catching four passes for 95 yards and senior running back Jeff Harris had 20 carries for 63 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles had 173 rushing yards and 365 total yards.
The Aledo Bearcats opened the season with a resounding win over Randy Allen's Highland Park Scots. The Bearcats routed Highland Park, 31-12, in the Tom Landry Classic held at SMU's Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
Many pundits and fans were wondering if the three-time defending state champs would take a step back after the graduation of running back Johnathan Gray.
Aledo Head Coach Tim Buchanan points out that Gray's accomplishments are respected and appreciated but Aledo was a strong program before Gray and continues to be one.
The strength of the 2012 team was expected to be the defense and it did not disappoint in the opener. The Bearcats forced four turnovers and gave up zero second-half points to the Scots.
Bearcat senior quarterback Pate Davis threw for 170 yards and two scores and ran for another 82 with a touchdown.
Hugh Sandifer's Abilene Wylie Bulldogs piled up 383 yards in an impressive 31-14 win over the defending Class 3A Division II state runner-up Argyle Eagles.
Wylie senior running back Garrett Martin accounted for 225 total yards and a pair of scores on 36 touches. Bulldog first-year starting quarterback Taylor Grant connected on 13 of 28 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns.
The Bulldogs were able to hold Argyle's playmaker, Ian Sadler, to a total of three offensive touches for 0 yards. Last season, as a sophomore, Sadler caught 53 balls for 1,115 yards and 12 touchdowns.
The Holliday Eagles made the road trip to play in Allen's $60 million stadium Saturday afternoon against Van Alstyne.
Holliday scored 31 first-half points and its defense forced five turnovers in delivering a 38-7 win over the Panthers.
Holliday used a two-quarterback system with Brennan Whitaker completed 9 of 11 attempts for 144 yards and two touchdowns to Beau Hadderton. Jacob Cole threw for 51 yards and a touchdown and led all rushers with 93 yards.
The Eagles defense pounded Van Alstyne all afternoon forcing the Panthers to fumble seven times, losing four of them, and also hauled in an interception.
The Joaquin pulled off a huge upset knocking off Tenaha the Class A DII defending state champs. The Rams' defense dominated the Tigers in the 22-6 stunner.
The Tigers, who were ranked at #3 in The Old Coach Preseason Poll, were held to just 46 yards of rushing while Joaquin's offense rolled up 261 yards all on the ground as the Rams did not attempt a pass.
Senior running back Wyatt Hairgrove led the Rams with 121 yards on 15 carries.
