Athens- A game that featured Texas verbal Jalen Overstreet and Texas Tech pledge Dominique Wheeler came down to one thing- Special Teams. Tatum's Samuel Zapata connected on two long range field goals, 41 and 44 yards respectively, while Crockett's Juan Barrientos failed to connect on two extra points.
Crockett marched 62 yards on just five plays to get on the board first with Andjuwan Smith reaching pay dirt from two yards out. After a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Tatum was able to hold Crockett to a three and out then Tatum marched the length of the field and tied the game up with a 26 yard screen pass from Overstreet to Nate Pickett.
Crockett's Smith hooked up with Jonathan Ware on an 8-yard touchdown pass to close out the first period to put Crockett in front 14-7, Overstreet and Pickett connected again on a short TD pass early in the second to again knot the score at 14-14.
The next Crockett drive saw Pickett give Tatum the lead as he returned a Smith pass intended for Dominique Wheeler 20 yards to go ahead 21-14.
Smith answered for Crockett with a 4-yard run late in the half, but Barrientos missed the PAT. Few plays later Zapata connected on his first FG of the night, from 44 yards out as Tatum to a 24-20 lead in the half.
Crockett went ahead for the final time of the game on a 2 yard run by Smith, but Tatum's Zapata was clutch again, connecting from 41 yards out to tie it up at 27-27 late in the fourth. Jordan Noel came on big for Tatum with just over two minutes to play returning an interception 55 yards for a score.
Crockett found life has Smith hit Wheeler for a 64 yard gain that set up a 9 yard touchdown run by Smith but failed extra point proved to be the difference.
Crockett finishes the season at 11-2 while Tatum, 12-2, moves on to face Hempstead in the Class 2A Division I State Semi-Finals.
