Stadium Review: Eagle-Mustang Stadium
Eagle-Mustang Stadium
Richardson, TX
From US 75, in Richardson, exit Beltline. Go east for about 1.5 miles. You can see Richardson High School on the north side, and the stadium is behind it off of Dogwood.
Home Team: Richardson, Richardson Pearce
Parking/Traffic: Score -- 2
The only parking that is provided is on the school ground. It is pathetic because the parking spaces are very limited and once filled up, fans have to park by the street. Even Allen High School has better parking than this stadium.
Press Box: Score -- 3
If you're obese like I am (Diggs speaking here) - it's a built in work out to get to the press box here. There is no separate area for the press and scouts, so they are in the same room. They have a 1950's air conditioner and the bathroom, well, it has seen better days. It is one of the worst 5A press boxes in the state - it is the equivalent of an RV on the top of the stadium. If you're lucky, you'll get a phone line, and if the wind blows right, you might get high speed. Usually no catering and limited drinks from the RISD.
Field: Score -- 8
Field turf was added in 2000 making the playing surface soft when getting tackled. They have a drainage system when it rains. The yards lines and end zones are not faded.
Atmosphere: Score -- 3
The atmosphere is plain dead and there is no home field advantage what so ever. Even the visitors are louder than the home team. The reason behind it is that the home teams Richardson and Pearce are not a good football team, but did a little better when they got moved down to 4A. Sad part is that there are more visitors than home side during most games.
(Matt's note: If Richardson ever got good, I could see the school in the background with the big E A G L E S making a good atmosphere, but it'll take some time in 5A.)
Intangibles: Score -- 4
Even though new turf was added, the bond money needs to renovate the stadium with cleaner bathrooms and a better concession stand. Sadly, the stadium is jammed between the high school and a middle school.
(Matt's note: They're renovated the high schools, perhaps the stadium is next!)
Overall Score: 20
42-50 -- Worth seeing the stadium even if two 0-10 schools are playing. Everyone should visit this stadium as soon as possible. Look for a JV game if you have to to see a game.
34-41 -- An excellent stadium. The only way that this stadium could be better is if you had a good game playing.
26-33 -- An average football stadium. If you're in the neighborhood and a team you're scouting is playing, this is the stadium for you.
20-25 -- Parents of band, football players and drill teams would enjoy the game, but only because of parental pride.
Under 20 -- Time to ask the school district for a bond election.
