Crosby Uses Impressive First Half to Power Past Port Lavaca Cahoun
SAN ANTONIO - Crosby Freshman running back Craig Williams returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and the Crosby Cougars (11-1) never looked back in a 36-14 win over the Port Lavaca Calhoun Sandcrabs (6-6) Saturday afternoon at the Alamodome.
From that point on it was the Crosby defense which stepped to the forefront in slowing down the vaunted Slot-T offense from Calhoun as the Cougars forced four turnovers and pitched a shutout in the first half as they led 29-0 at the half. Sophomore RB Carlos Grace led the way for the Cougars with 132 yards rushing and a touchdown as Crosby used several different ball carries and receivers to pace a balanced attack.
Crosby advances to the Class 5A Region III Division II Semi-Finals where they will take on Brenham Saturday at 6:00pm at Woodforest Bank Stadium in Shenandoah.
Late Defensive Stand Propels San Antonio Reagan Past San Antonio Stevens
SAN ANTONIO - After a wild first quarter that saw 45 points scored, it was the San Antonio Reagan (11-1) that stepped to the forefront to contain an explosive offense from San Antonio Stevens (8-4) and escape the Alamodome with a 38-31 win.
The Rattlers were led by sophomore QB Kellen Mond who threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns, but it was a 35 yard pick six by Reagan DB Vincent Hunter that staked the Rattlers out to an early 24-7 lead. Stevens answered with two scores in the final 1:40 of the first quarter to cut the lead to 24-21. Falcons QB Bobby Chacon topped 260 passing yards and tossed a pair of touchdowns as SHS fought back after digging themselves and early hole.
The game settled down in the second quarter with Reagan extending to a 31-24 halftime lead as the Rattlers got a 44 yard touchdown from Mond to RB Ian Leslie after Stevens had tied it at 24. After a defensive battle most of the third quarter, Stevens would finally break through on the Reagan defense as Xavier Ortiz hauled in a 59 yard touchdown to tie the game at 31. Reagan would have an answer midway through the fourth quarter as RB Skyler Wetzel would haul in his second touchdown of the night, this one from four yards out to put Reagan ahead for good. Stevens would make one last push, driving all the way to the Reagan two yard line with 1:30 remaining but on 4th and goal Reagan DB Tyler Brenner knocked a pass away to preserve the Rattlers win.
San Antonio Reagan advances to the Class 6A Region IV Division I Semi-Finals where they'll take on Los Fresnos Saturday 2:00pm at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Efficient First Half Offense Carries Steele to Showdown Win
SAN ANTONIO - In a battle of the established power versus the up and comer, the established powerhouse Cibolo Steele Knights (11-1) knocked off San Antonio Brennan (11-1) 24-12 in the final Saturday game at the Alamodome.
Steele scored on all four possessions in the first half as WR Jaylen Harris got it done on the ground scoring on a 61 yard run on just the second play of the game to stake the Knights to an early 7-0 lead. Brennan would respond quickly with electric QB Da'Shawn Key scoring from 21 yards out to cut the lead to 7-6 after the PAT failed.
The Knights would answer on their next drive as again Harris scored on the ground, this time from 15 yards out making a jaw dropping move on the sideline to get to the pylon and put the Knights ahead 14-6. After a field goal for Steele made it 17-6 early in the second quarter, Brennan would answer again as Key would score from five yards out to make the score 17-12 with 5:37 left in the second quarter. Steele would quell all the momentum Brennan apparently had after the score as they marched right back down the field and scored with 28 seconds left in the half on QB L.G. Williams two yard run to make it 24-12.
Williams run would be the final points of the game as the second half was played with no clock, scoreboard or play clock as a lightning strike in the area cut power to the Alamodome. The Knights would control the clock and move inside the Brennan red zone multiple times in the second half but they were unable to punch in another score. Steele's defense anchored by DE Mark Jackson shut down the Brennan offense which never could find any sort of second half rhythm.
Cibolo Steele will advance to the Class 6A Region IV Division II Semi-Finals next week where they will take on Weslaco East Friday night at 7:00pm at Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus Christi.
