Irving, TX - Hunter Nix orchestrated one of his best drives ever in his high school career Saturday at Texas Stadium as Prosper (14-1) took down Waco La Vega, 17-10, for the Class 3A Division I State Championship.
"This was a great win for our seniors, school, community and everyone involved and I've just been blessed to be a part of it", said Prosper head coach Kent Scott.
Nix led the Eagles on a seven play, 72-yard drive that was capped off by a 15-yard run by Bryan Monroe giving Prosper the lead, 17-10 with less than three minutes left. Nix had evened up the score at 10 after a 2-yard run late in the third.
"We knew we were a second half team. We made some adjustments at the half and our offensive line took control in the second half", said Nix.
Prosper's defense also made necessary adjustments at halftime too, holding the Pirates scoreless in the second half.
"We just made up our minds that this was our game to take, so the defense had to do their job", said Prosper freshman defensive end Mario Edwards.
La Vega jumped out to an early 10-0 lead on their first two possessions and after that, the Eagles' defense took matters into their own hands. The Pirates moved down to the Prosper 30 in the closing minutes, but defensive back Rusty Neely sealed the deal after two pass breakups.
