Several prospects from the greater Houston area made the trip this past weekend to compete at the Rivals Camp in New Orleans. One of the standouts from the quarterbacks group was Houston (Texas) Lamar quarterback Owen Holt.

Holt is still waiting on his first scholarship offer, but a handful of programs have started to reach out with interest lately.

"I'm talking with the coaches at Rice University and they are reviewing my transcripts," Holt said. "I will be taking an unofficial visit to the campus this weekend and plan on speaking with the coaches about a potential offer. The area recruiter from Yale also recently started asking me for my transcripts and wanted to know more about my recruitment.

"I have Yale, Brown, and a handful of other Ivy League schools showing interest and sending mail. Grades are not a concern and those are all great options for me at the next level. I'm talking with my parents about possibly setting up a visit to Yale sometime this spring or later this summer."

Outside of the local interest from Rice and the Ivy League programs, a couple of new programs have recently reached out to Holt's coaches at Lamar about him.

"My coaches have talked with coaches from Cal and Washington about me this past week," Holt said. "I haven't really been introduced to the coaches, but a few of them have followed me on social media and the Washington coaches actually invited me to a junior day they are having this spring.

"The only thing about visits to places like Yale or Washington this spring is the travel involved. I'm on the varsity baseball team here at Lamar and my schedule is busy every weekend with baseball games, so taking visits is tough. I have talked with my parents about setting up some of these visits for sometime this summer."

College coaches are often picky about what they look for in a quarterback prospect and Holt is already hearing a few things from the coaches recruiting him about his game.

"The Rice coaches like my ability to run the spread offense and the zone read concepts," Holt said. "They haven't done a lot of that at Rice, but would like to start incorporating it more into the offense. We have a package where I have the zone read option to run or pass that we run here at Lamar.

"For me personally, I'm trying to work on moving outside of the pocket while keeping my eyes downfield and throwing accurately on the run."

Currently unrated, the 6-foot-1, 202-pound prospect finished with nearly 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns passing along with another 150 yards and two touchdowns rushing - earning District 20-6A All-District First Team Offense honors this past season.
