Odessa Jumps Into Lead in District 2-5A

ODESSA- On a beautiful homecoming evening at Ratliff Stadium, the Odessa Bronchos (3-1, 3-0) took sole possession of first place in District 2-5A with a dominating 28-14 win over the Amarillo Tascosa Rebels (3-1, 2-1). Odessa's defense was the story holding Tascosa to just 48 total yards in the second half.
With the stunning loss by Odessa Permian to Amarillo, Odessa is now in sole possession of first place and can put major distance between themselves and the rest of the pack with a win in two weeks over long time rival Permian.

OHS didn't put up the spectacular numbers they normally do on offense as the stingy Tascosa defense stacked the box and aggressively defended star RB Bradley Marquez who only had 61 yards on 18 carries. QB Derrick Teegarden was able to pick up the slack throwing for 115 yards and two touchdowns along with 65 yards on the ground and a score.
Amarillo Tascosa got off to a strong start as Will Smith returned the game's opening kickoff to the forty yards line, however the OHS defense held and forced a three and out. After an Odessa punt, Tascosa got good field position and quickly took advantage as QB Dalton Brooks hooked up with Toby Dennis for a 34 yard touchdown pass to give THS an early 7-0 advantage.
Odessa would have a quick answer as a 28 yard run by Teegarden would set the Bronchos up in Tascosa territory. OHS would tie the game up as Teegarden hooked up with Tyler McQueen for an eleven yard touchdown pass. Tascosa after another big return by Smith appeared to be poised to take the lead back with great field position, but a chop block penalty and a sack of Brooks for THS to punt. This allowed the OHS special teams to step up as Gabriel Rodriguez would return the punt 70 yards for a touchdown to put OHS up 14-7. The return was set up due to a crushing block by Odessa DE Dejion Rangel.
Tascosa tied things up in the second quarter as Brooks would score on a 14 yard run, the run was a heads up play by Brooks who drew OHS offsides with a hard count. The whistle never blew and the OHS defense stood around so Brooks strolled into the end zone.
The second half would be dominated by both defenses but the Odessa offense made enough big plays to pull away. With 4:58 left in the third quarter Odessa took the lead back as Teegarden hooked up with Jonathan Lara for a 31 yard touchdown pass. Tascosa DB Timetrious Dizer had excellent coverage but he mistimed his jump and Lara was able to score. Teegarden would chip in a seven yard scoring run in the fourth for the final score for the margin of 28-14.
Both teams are idle next week as all of District 2-5A is on a bye week.
