LEXINGTON - The 2014 7 on 7 State Qualifying Tournaments got underway on Saturday and one of the longer running Division II tournaments has been the tournament at Lexington. This year there was little doubt it was a tournament dominated by teams wearing blue and white as Navasota and Crockett both rolled to 4-0 records on Saturday to lock up spots in the 2014 7 on 7 State Tournament in College Station.
Crockett which won just one game a year ago with a very young team came out looking like a team on mission early on in Pool B as they blasted Bremond 34-13. The Bulldogs who will have a new coach in 2014 as Jimmy Thompson takes over played with a purpose and their talent, most notably on the defensive side of the ball shined all day as they were only tested in their final pool play game against Lexington, knocking the Eagles off 41-38.
Navasota who was without their star RB Derrion Randle showed they'd still be a force as receivers Tren'Davian Dickson and Jerbrell Lipscomb were uncoverable all day. Lipscomb made several highlight reel catches and Dickson showed why he's one of the top receivers in the Class of 2016 as he smoothly ran through opposing secondaries all afternoon. Junior QB Shelton Eppler was efficient running the offense as well. Navasota did struggle in their second game beating feisty Giddings 18-14 but the Rattlers other three games were non-competitive contests.
"I was proud of the kids today, we came out and this was their first real 7 on 7 action of the summer and our kids came out focused and took care of business. Our young kids gelled with our veterans and that was great, those kinds of things are what 7 on 7 is about. Did we make some mistakes? Yes, but they are correctable and the best way for us to improve is to get these kinds of reps in," said Navasota HC Lee Fedora who was out watching his team today from the home bleachers.
In other tournament notes, don't expect Lexington to be a veteran ball club for at least two more years as they only had one senior seeing significant reps on Saturday. It was mostly kids who will be freshman and sophomores in 2014 seeing action and at times Lexington showed some flashes advancing to the semi-finals before being overwhelmed by Navasota. Rockdale started the day out strong but faded late getting hammered by Navasota in pool play and having a sluggish effort against Crockett in the semi-finals, the Tigers have some kids still banged up with injuries but their biggest key will be getting consistency from their new QB. Cameron Yoe struggled on Saturday going 0-3, the Yoemen are trying to figure out who their QB will be in 2014 as four different players took snaps on Saturday.
