CORPUS CHRISTI - The Mission Sharyland Rattlers made it two years in a row qualifying for the State 7 on 7 Tournament at the Calallen SQT on Saturday. Sharyland went unbeaten through pool play and held off a tough challenge from tough luck Laredo United 32-20 to punch their ticket to the State Tournament. The Rattlers rotated signal callers throughout the day as Diego Chrysler and Lance Madden both led an efficient attack that averaged 35 points per game on the afternoon. Laredo Guerra and James Cole were two way standouts that were key factors as well for the Rattlers. Sharyland opened the day with an impressive 56-7 win over Victoria West, but they had to fight hard in their next two games, wins over Alice and Harlingen South.
Somerset had to fight through Pool C which had plenty of balance, so much so that after two rounds of play all four teams held 1-1 records. The Bulldogs dropped their opener to Mercedes but bounced back to win their next two games over Mission Veterans Memorial and Corpus Christi Flour Bluff. By virtue of their win over Veterans, Somerset moved on from Pool C with a 2-1 record. In the semi-finals the Bulldogs jumped all over Port Lavaca Calhoun leading 27-6 at the half and they cruised to a State Tournament spot beating the Sandcrabs 43-24. QB Koy Detmer Jr. lead the Somerset offense which was brutally efficient, Rocky Reyna and Justin Guerra were two of a bevy of receivers who had good days for the Bulldogs.
Laredo United for the second week in a row advanced to the semi-finals of a State Qualifier only to see their hopes dashed. Mercedes, had been unbeaten in league play and non-qualifying play up to this weekend lost their first two 7 on 7 games of the summer in pool play. Corpus Christi Carroll also had some tough luck losing their first two pool games by a total of seven points before winning their final game over Weslaco. Flour Bluff's Jalen Campbell still recovering from a knee injury looks to be close to 100% and should be full strength for the Hornets season opener.
