MESQUITE - After a slow start to the season, it appears the Mesquite Poteet Pirates (2-1) have gotten things in gear after they ripped through the Richardson Berkner Rams (2-1) 45-14 Friday night at Hanby Stadium.
DeAndre McNeal had a monster first half and staked Poteet out to a 21-0 lead with three first half touchdowns and from that point it was church as Berkner's offense simply had no ability to sustain drives against the Poteet defense led by LB Malik Jefferson. The Pirates defense made the first big play of the game as LB Kelton Collins picked off a Davis Steeleman pass.
Poteet wasted no time jumping ahead as sophomore QB Kaleb Fletcher lofted a beautifully thrown 70 yard touchdown pass to McNeal putting Poteet up 7-0. Poteet would jump ahead 14-0 on a three yard run by McNeal as the Pirates were aided with some great field position as a short punt set PHS up at the Berkner 15. Poteet would go up 21-0 in the second quarter after a long punt return by Caine Robbins set the Pirates up at the BHS 20. McNeal would get his second touchdown run of the half and Poteet led 21-0 early in the second quarter.
LB Ja'Quarius Avery would return an interception 79 yards later in the second quarter and Poteet led 28-0 and the lead would balloon to 35-0 at the half as Fletcher threw a short touchdown pass to RB Jaylon Smith. The majority of the second half was spent with Poteet shuttling in multiple backups so things got sloppy, especially in the fourth quarter. Fletcher would throw one more touchdown later in the third to put Poteet up 42-0 as he threw a 46 yard strike to sophomore WR Cha Cha Courbin. Berkner would add a couple of late touchdowns, but that was mostly window dressing as this game was not in doubt after about half of the first quarter.
