Mart Holds Off Late Cisco Rally to Win State
FORT WORTH- The Mart Panthers (15-1) scored 16 points off of 4 Cisco (14-2) turnovers in the first half to hold off the Loboes 23-13 Saturday afternoon in the Class 2A Division 2 state championship game at Northwest ISD Stadium. Mart WR Kenny Barrett led the Panthers as he caught 4 passes for 83 yards and 3 touchdowns as Mart took home their fourth state championship.
Mart caught the first big break of the game, as Cisco QB Jacob West mishandled a snap and Mart DB Alton Williams scooped the loose ball and raced 56 yards down to the Cisco six yard line. The Panthers however were unable to capitalize on the mistake as QB Lee McClendon fumbled a third and goal snap from the three which squelched any chances for a MHS score. The Panthers would have to settle for a 28 yard field goal by Brandon Goodnight and with 1:35 left in the first it was 3-0 Mart. Cisco on their ensuing drive moved the ball inside the Mart 10 but on a third and goal, West this time was picked off by DB Nate Hopping who returned the ball 56 yards into Cisco territory, however the Loboes would get the ball right back as DB Josh Bridges would pick off a deep McClendon pass to stop the Panthers threat. Cisco would however fumble the ball back to Mart and this time the Panthers would take advantage as Kenny Barrett would score on a seven yard slant pass from McClendon on a third and goal, the PAT was true and with 1:46 left in the first half Mart jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Cisco would once again give Mart a gift as FB Caleb Busby would fumble on a dive play and DL Tim Jones would scoop the ball up and return it to the Cisco 33 with a minute left in the half. Mart would make the Loboes pay as McClendon hooked up with Barrett once again this time from five yards out, the PAT was blocked and with 16 seconds left in the first half Mart led 16-0. Cisco would take a knee and the teams would head into the locker room with Mart up 16-0.
Cisco had their chances in the second half, but the Loboes were unable to muster any points as Mart's defense made plays at key moments to stop the CHS offense. Early in the second half Mart WR Kenny Barrett caught his third touchdown of the game as took a short crossing route 50 yards for the score to make it 23-0 Mart with 10:24 left in the game. Cisco would finally get on the board as Jacob West would score from 24 yards out to make it 23-6 Mart with 7:17 left in the game as Cisco's two point try failed. Cisco wouldn't go away without a fight as with 2:44 left West hooked up with a wide open Robert Medina for a 22 yard touchdown pass, Clay Strickland's PAT was good and Cisco had cut the lead to 23-13. Cisco would try an onside kick but the kick was recovered by Mart's Damian Davis to end the Cisco rally.
