FLOWER MOUND - Second chances don't always come in the game of football, but for Flower Mound Marcus senior kicker Drew Hamrick he got a shot at redemption and then some as Flower Mound Marcus (5-0, 2-0) knocked off Flower Mound (1-4, 0-2) 38-37 in overtime to win the 12th annual Mound Showdown in front of an overflow crowd of 11,000 at Marcus Marauder Stadium.
Trailing 31-28 with 2:32 remaining in the game, Hamrick missed a 34 yard potential game tying field goal wide left. The Marauders defense however, rose to the occasion and forced a quick Flower Mound three and out to give their offense another chance with just 53 seconds remaining. Marcus would take advantage of the second chance as with nine seconds left Hamrick drilled a 36 yard field goal to send the game into overtime tied at 31.
Flower Mound would need just two plays to score on their possession in overtime as Cole McKeel would score on a 16 yard swing pass from Marshall Williams to put the Jaguars up 37-31. The Marcus special teams would give their offense a chance to win the game as senior defensive lineman Jake Blount would block the point after attempt leaving the Flower Mound lead at just six.
Flower Mound Marcus would need just three plays to score on their overtime chance as senior Jeff Smiley scored from nine yards out to tie the game at 37 and set up Hamrick up to win the game with the PAT. After a timeout called by Flower Mound, Hamrick calmly drilled the point after to send Marcus to a 38-37 win and a celebration fitting of an intense rivalry win.
The fourth quarter roller coaster ride overshadowed another shootout between the two 8-5A rivals as the Marcus offense rolled up 592 total yards. Harvey Giddens was the workhorse for the offense carrying the ball 32 times for 241 yards and three touchdowns, while speedy Jeff Smiley ran for 213 yards on 21 carries and a pair of touchdowns.
Not to be outdone, Flower Mound quarterback Marshall Williams finished the night with 438 yards through the air and five touchdowns, his favorite target was Beau LaFave who hauled in six passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns, including a key 33 yard touchdown pass on the final play of the first half that gave Flower Mound their first lead of the game at 17-13.
Early in the game Marcus looked to be on their way to an easy win jumping out to a quick 13-0 lead after one quarter. Flower Mound was able to get back in the game behind their defense which was able to stop Marcus twice in FMHS territory on fourth down in the second quarter. Twice, Flower Mound scored after the turnovers on downs thus putting momentum squarely on the side of FMHS. After Marcus scored on their first drive of the second half to take the lead back at 20-17, Flower Mound would answer back with two unanswered scores to jump ahead 31-20 heading into the fourth.
Marcus would then answer with eleven straight points in the fourth, starting with a three yard run by Giddens with 7:29 left in the game to cut the deficit to 31-26 as the two point try failed. After a quick three and out by the Flower Mound offense, Marcus' Dylan Ward blocked a FMHS punt out of the end zone for a safety to cut the lead to 31-28 before setting up the late fourth quarter heroics of Hamrick.
Now at 0-2 in District 8-5A, Flower Mound faces a must win this week as they take on Plano, while Marcus hosts Plano West.
