SHREVEPORT - The Longview Lobos prevented the state of Texas from being shut out at the Landers Battle on the Border this weekend at Independence Stadium. Gladewater, fell to Lafayette St. Thomas More on Friday, while Marshall and Lufkin lost Saturday. However, Longview mustered a win in the finale and prevented the shut out.
In the opening game of the quadruple headed, Marshall (2-1) took a serious step up in competition as they dropped a game to a very good Bossier City, LA Parkway squad 45-21. The Mavericks jumped out to a 7-6 lead as LB Jalon Mitchell returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown early in the first quarter. That would be Marshall's only lead as Parkway rattled off 27 straight points to stake out a 33-7 halftime lead and cruise in the second half. Parkway didn't have to punt in the entire half as their offense was simply unstoppable. Marshall would outscore Parkway in the second half 14-12 to keep the score respectable, ATH John Love led the way with 137 yards from scrimmage and a 20 yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter.
The game of the day was Lufkin (2-1) falling in a thriller to powerhouse John Curtis out of the New Orleans area. Lufkin managed to go toe to toe with the Patriots despite turning the ball over five times and allowing a punt return for a touchdown. Lufkin trailed early 12-0 as on their first two offensive plays the Panthers lost fumbles. Lufkin battled back as QB Trey Cumbie hit WR Terry Mark for a pair of touchdowns and Lufkin would find themselves tied at 19 at halftime. The Panthers would take a 25-19 lead after three quarters as Keke Coutee would haul in a touchdown pass from Cumbie. Lufkin early in the fourth made a huge defensive stop at their own ten yard line on 4th and 5, but on the first play a fumble gave the Patriots the ball on the Lufkin five. Two plays later the Patriots would tie the game at 25 on a short touchdown run. Lufkin would start the next drive backed up inside their own ten after a penalty on the kickoff and the Panthers would quickly go three and out. On the ensuing short punt, the Patriots would return it 32 yards for the score and 32-25 lead with little over six minutes left. Lufkin would have two more chances to tie the game as they moved all the way down to the John Curtis five yard line, but the Panthers were stopped on downs. Longview's defense would hold John Curtis and give their offense one more shot with less than a minute left in Patriot territory, but an interception would end the game as JCCS would take a knee twice.
In the nightcap, which didn't start until until 9:20pm the Longview Lobos (1-2) earned a hard fought 19-13 win over the Monroe Neville Tigers. It was a tale of two halves as Longview totally dominated a shell shocked Neville squad taking a 19-0 halftime lead. The Lobos took the opening kickoff and quick took a 6-0 lead as Dezmond Chumley hooked up with WR Antonio Carter who made a fantastic adjustment on the ball to haul in a forty yard touchdown. Longview on their next drive would extend the lead to 12-0 as Chumley would score on a one yard QB sneak. The lead would grow to 19-0 in the second quarter as Chumley hit WR Jon Sorrey for a long pass down to the one and big FB Marquies Hunter would cap the drive with a one yard run. Neville late in the second quarter would get some things going on offense, but they'd miss a pair of field goals which would come back to haunt them since they lost by six. Neville would open the second half with a trick play and less than a minute into the third quarter the Lobos lead was cut to 19-7. The Tigers would add a score late in the third and Longview was on the ropes leading 19-13. Longview's offense wouldn't help the defense out much as the Lobos simply couldn't get anything going on offense and most of the fourth quarter was played in Lobo territory, but the Lobos made play after play in crucial moments and would hang on for the win.
