FORT WORTH - Leading 38-7 early in the third quarter it appeared the Lake Dallas Falcons (9-1, 6-0) would cruise to an easy win, but it wasn't until Josh Tauaefa scored on a 26 yard touchdown run with 1:20 remaining that Falcon fans could breathe easier in a hard fought 46-36 win over Fort Worth Dunbar (7-3, 5-2) to close out the regular season Thursday night at Clark Stadium.
Down 31 points and without Kansas verbal commit running back Taylor Martin, who was ejected in the first quarter Coach Todd Lawson's Wildcats turned to Devonte Kinney who scored three straight touchdowns to key the comeback and cut the LDHS lead to 38-36 late in the fourth quarter.
Lake Dallas relied heavily on junior receiver Keegan Brewer who did a little bit of everything for the Falcons as he hauled in six passes for 139 yards and two scores, with most of that damage coming in the first half. Brewer's monster half helped stake LDHS out to a 31-7 halftime lead as he hauled in his two touchdown passes of 66 and 22 yards from quarterback Dagan Haehn. Then Brewer flashed his defensive abilities as he intercepted a Dunbar pass late in the first quarter to end a DHS scoring threat. After Haehn's one yard touchdown run to make it 38-7 the game turned completely around as Dunbar got two touchdown runs from Kinney of 10 and 27 yards and then Kinney hauled in a 46 yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Nakkia Cox, while Dunbar's defense was able to get some stops and set their offense up in good field position.
After Dunbar cut the lead the just two points on Wesley Roberts three yard touchdown pass from Cox, Lake Dallas turned to their ground game to ice the game as running back Courtenay Holder who finished with 153 yards rushing picked up a couple of key first downs before Tauaefa's game clinching touchdown run. Dunbar's efforts to rally were marred throughout the game by sloppy play as the Wildcats had 15 penalties for 148 yards on the night.
Dunbar will be the second seed out of Division II in 6-5A and they'll open the bi-district playoffs against Azle next Friday night at Chisholm Trail High School, while Lake Dallas earns the top seed out of 6-5A and they'll take on Wichita Falls next Friday night in Springtown.
