Katy Defense Paces Rout of Katy Cinco Ranch
KATY - The Katy Tigers (9-0, 6-0) left little doubt who the top team remained in the city as they blasted Katy Cinco Ranch (7-2, 5-1) 40-7 on Saturday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd of 10,500 at Rhodes Stadium.
Katy's defense, while still young was the story of the afternoon forcing six turnovers and holding a typically potent Cougars attack to just 82 yards of total offense. Junior DB Sy Slater led the Katy defense with a pair of interceptions including one that was returned for a touchdown to put Katy up 17-7 in the second quarter. Collin Wilder one of three sophomores who starts in the secondary for Katy had an interception and a fumble recovery as well to pace the Katy defense.
Reliable kicker Manny Mendoza had perhaps his best day as a Tiger as he nailed four field goals including a 52 yard kick in the third quarter to give Katy plenty of breathing room as their offense struggled for the most part.
Katy led 7-0 after a three yard run by junior RB Rodney Anderson who played in his first game in six weeks, he showed flashes of brilliance but did show some rust early on. Cinco would get their only score of the game on a one yard run by Denzell Bates who broke about three tackles in about the most impressive one yard run you'll ever see. The Cougars lone score was set up by a short a punt against the wind.
The Tigers would answer to take a 10-7 lead as Mendoza nailed his first field goal from 41 yards out, the score was set up by a 43 yard pass from QB Kiley Huddleston to Logan Otte. The next drive is where the game completely turned as Slater picked off CRHS QB Luke Klingler and returned it 35 yards for the score and a commanding 17-7 lead for the Tigers.
Cinco Ranch would fumble on their next drive, but their defense which did a good job all day would KHS to a field goal and it was 20-7 Katy at the half. Katy would add two more field goals in the third and then two Anderson touchdowns in the fourth, including a 51 yard touchdown pass from backup QB Garrett Doirion as the Katy rout took shape.
Katy has wrapped up the district title and will close their season out next week, while Cinco Ranch who is bound for the Division I bracket will finish the regular season as well.
Port Lavaca Calhoun Wins a Saturday Night Shootout
PORT LAVACA - In a rare Saturday night home game, the Port Lavaca Calhoun Sandcrabs (9-1, 5-1) and the Victoria East Titans (3-6, 2-3) put on a show to remember in Calhoun's 76-55 win at Sandcrab Stadium.
It was a game that featured 131 points, over 1000 yards of offense and a staggering 19 touchdowns scored. Calhoun possessed the ball 12 times and scored eleven times, the only time the Sandcrabs were stopped was at the end of the first half when they simply ran out of time in East territory.
Calhoun's ground game put up over 600 yards led by Corey Williams who ran for 260 yards and four touchdowns, Brandon Smithwick ran for 141 yards and three touchdowns, while QB Hunter Boerm ran for 169 yards and two scores and also threw a touchdown pass.
Victoria East got a monster performance from QB Jonathan Ortega as he threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 154 yards and a touchdown. WR D'Andric Lofton was his favorite target hauling in four passes for 148 yards and two scores, Lofton also returned a kickoff 77 yards for a touchdown.
With the game tied at 55 early in the fourth quarter Calhoun took the lead for good on a 49 yard run by Smithwick to make it 62-55. The Sandcrabs defense finally got a stop and put the game on ice on the next drive with Boerm scoring on a 21 yard run to give CHS a two score lead. Calhoun would get one more stop late and Williams would score on a 30 yard run to close out the scoring. Both halves ended with near fisticuffs as the game several times got testy. The East bench emptied after the game, but both teams were separated and no punches were thrown.
