ROSENBERG - In their first football related action against an opponent from a different school the Katy Tigers showed no hangover effects from their state championship loss as they rolled to a 4-0 mark and a spot in the 2014 7 on 7 State Championships in July at the Terry SQT.
Katy started the day off in impressive fashion with a 26-7 domination of previously qualified Houston Lamar, the Texans had their entire squad of players but it didn't matter as Katy's defense was lights out with four second half interceptions including a pick six to roll past Lamar. The Katy offense started to click after that winning a tough 39-34 game over a feisty Fort Bend Clements squad and then taking Rosenberg Terry out 40-26. In the semi-finals Katy jumped on arch rival Katy Cinco Ranch quickly taking a 21-6 lead at the half cruising to a 33-26 win to advance to state.
"The kids played well and had fun, that's the biggest thing is getting out there and having fun. We know it's not football, but we like the kids out throwing and catching its better than them just not doing anything," said Katy HC Gary Joseph.
If you had the Montgomery Bears advancing from a tough bottom half of the bracket in your office pool you may have won some money as MHS put together a tremendous 4-0 run to also qualify for the State Tournament. The Bears rolled through Pool C starting out the day quickly with a 38-6 win over Alief Elsik, then they held on for a tough 35-34 win over Cypress Creek before taking down Channelview to win the pool.
Montgomery then took on Richmond Foster in the semi-finals, Foster won an emotional 30-26 victory over rival George Ranch to win a brutal Pool D, but the Falcons offense just couldn't get going in a 22-12 loss to Montgomery in the semi-finals.
