Jesuit coach Wunderlick steps down; Sunnyvale set
Jesuit coach Bob Wunderlick, who has guided the program with success in its transition to competing in Class 5A of the UIL has stepped down effective immediately.
Former Brownsboro coach John Settle (who played on those great Daingerfield teams of the 80s) will be recommended to Sunnyvale ISD school board. Sunnyval is in District 6-2A DI in the middle of the Mesquite ISD. Sunnyvale ISD middle schoolers used to go to Mesquite Poteet and North Mesquite.
Settle has been the AD/Football Coach at Brownsboro High School since 2004 and compiled an overall record of 45-32, including five playoff teams.
Settle told David Smoak: "I always thought being apart of a new program would be awfully exciting. Sunnyvale is strong academically and building the program from scratch is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Sunnyvale has played only one season with a senior class and the other sports have been successful, so why not football?"
At Jesuit, an email to Jesuit faculty/staff and parents, Jesuit officials said Wunderlick will continue coaching and remain on the faculty teaching English. Of his decision, Wunderlick said: "This is a decision I've been considering for some time. I spoke with my wife and decided this is a good time to step down. I love coaching and teaching, and I love Jesuit-a place I've called home all my life. This move will allow me more time to focus on those folks and those things I love most."
Reflecting on Wunderlick's 14 years leading the Jesuit, Athletic Director Steve Koch commented:
"The success of our transition into the UIL during these last 7 years can largely be credited to Bob's hard work, commitment to the ideals of Jesuit and its programs, and his passion for doing things the right way. He has taken our football program to new heights and positively impacted hundreds of athletes. Jesuit trains students to be Men for Others who give more to the community than they take; Bob Wunderlick is certainly an example of this ideal. I am thrilled that he plans to remain on the faculty and continue to coach our students."
Jesuit won three TCIL titles in Wunderlick's first three seasons. After the league disbanded in 1999, Jesuit played four seasons as an independent before the UIL permitted Jesuit and Houston Strake Jesuit into the UIL.
Jesuit has four UIL state playoff appearances. Wunderlick's overall record at Jesuit was 81-68.
Wunderlick is a second generation Jesuit alum. He's been coaching at the school for 22 years and will coach sub-varsity sports but working with the new football staff in some capacity hasn't been ruled out. Assistant Brandon Hickman has been named interim coach.
The school will accept resumes until Feb. 7, 2011 from applicants for the head football coach position; resumes can be submitted to skoch@jesuitcp.org. Candidates will be evaluated for their ability to lead the football program while upholding the school's commitment to formation of young men guided by Christian ideals.
