Ground Game Powers Alief Elsik to Win Over Fort Bend Clements
HOUSTON - Despite some at times sloppy play the Alief Elsik Rams (7-1, 5-1) continued their surprise season pulling away from a scrappy Fort Bend Clements (1-6, 0-5) 44-24 Saturday at Crump Stadium.
Elsik rolled up 466 yards of offense, but the Rams did most of their damage on the ground with 424 rushing yards. EHS was led by junior RB EJ Davis who ran for 295 yards and five touchdowns in the win.
Davis wasted no time getting on the board as he staked Elsik to a 7-0 lead on their first offensive play as he ripped off a 62 yard touchdown run. Clements fought back on their ensuing drive scoring on a seven yard touchdown pass from Kolt Harfield to Luke Mayock cutting the lead to 7-6. Harfield ended the night with 272 yards passing and three touchdowns, two of which went to Mayock.
Trailing 14-6 after an eleven yard run by Davis, Clements would take their only lead of the game with back to back scoring drives. Harfield hooked up with Marcus Johnson for a touchdown pass, then he was on the receiving end of a seven yard TD pass on a trick play from WR Adam Cervenka to put Clements up 18-14.
Elsik would score the next 21 points of the game to seize control of the contest at 35-18 at the end of the third quarter. The big blow came right before halftime as leading 21-18, the Rams got receiver Dondre Louis wide open behind the Clements secondary and QB Devin Henderson lofted a perfect pass for the score and a 28-18 lead. Davis' fourth touchdown run of the game in the third quarter from a yard out would make it 35-18 and end any chance of a late rally from Fort Bend Clements.
Aleem's Big Night Helps Cy Fair Avoid Upset
CYPRESS - A week after a surprising late collapse in a loss to Langham Creek the Cy Fair Bobcats (6-1, 5-1) needed a late defensive stand to hold off a game Cypress Falls Golden Eagles (2-5, 1-5) squad in a 17-9 win Saturday night at Pridgeon Stadium.
The focus for most was on the two star defensive tackles in game (Falls Du'Vonta Lampkin and Fair's Ross Donelly but it was Cy Fair RB Jacorey Aleem who garnered headlines with 210 rushing yards and a pair of second half touchdowns which turned a 9-3 halftime deficit into a 17-9 lead.
The Bobcats opened up the game in typical Cy Fair fashion marching right down the field, almost exclusively on the ground but the drive stalled at the Cy Falls three and the Bobcats had to settle for a 20 yard field goal from Braden Mann and a 3-0 lead.
Cy Falls would score the game's next nine points as defensive lineman Corey Tollivercame in for a short yardage package and scored on a wo yard touchdown run to give Cy Falls a 6-3 edge, the Golden Eagles would add a 33 yard field goal from Martin Guerrero to make the score 9-3 at the half.
Aleem's first touchdown run with 6:55 left in the third quarter from four yards out would give Cy Fair the lead back at 10-9 and then with little more than seven minutes remaining Aleem would score from ten yards out to give the Bobcats an eight point lead at 17-9. Cy Falls would have multiple chances to try and tie the game up including with 1:55 left when Lampkin forced a Cy Falls fumble, DB Jeremy Hatcher who also had an interception on the night would pick up the loose ball and return it nearly 30 yards to the Cy Fair 24.
Cy Falls would move all the way down to the seven yard line with less than a minute left, but on 4th and goal Cy Fair DB Maxx Chrest would pick off the final Cy Falls pass at the goal line and return the ball out to midfield to seal the win. Cy Fair would kneel the ball twice to end the game at 17-9.
