Graham promotes Kenny Davidson
It took Graham only one week to find a replacement for Brad McCoy.
The Graham ISD school board unanimously chose Kenny Davidson to become the school's athletics director and football coach Tuesday night.
Davidson was the team's defensive coordinator last season and has been on staff for five years.
"I'm tickled to death to be the new head coach and I'm looking forward to the challenges," Davidson said. "Graham is one of the top 3A coaching jobs in the state. It has good tradition, great kids and support from the administration."
The decision came as no shock, since both Graham Superintendent Beau Rees and McCoy said administration would first look within for a replacement.
Davidson and offensive coordinator Jeff Williamson were considered the frontrunners for the job, but Rees said Davidson was the lone applicant.
That helped expedite the process of replacing McCoy, who resigned Feb. 9 to take a job with The Flippen Group.
"We were fortunate to have such a great candidate already on staff," Graham ISD Board President Terry Bishop said in a press release. "He knows the lay of the land and can hit the ground running."
Davidson has had success as a head coach before, compiling a 98-83 record at Fort Worth Christian over a 15-year span.
He won a TAPPS state championship in 1992 and also took the private school to three other state championship games.
"I had a run of pretty good talent there," said Davidson, who coached Curtis Fuller, a five-year NFL veteran who now coaches with the Green Bay Packers.
The impact Davidson made on the Steers' defense in 2009 was a major reason they played for a state championship.
He took over for Doug Handley and helped implement a defense based on speed. That unit, which had surrendered 33 points per game in 2008, kept 11 of its 16 opponents to 14 points or less.
Davidson also said Clay McChristian will take over as the team's defensive coordinator.
McChristian was the linebackers coach in 2009, his first year in Graham. He had been a defensive coordinator at Stanton before that.
