Garland Shuts Out Lakeview Centennial

GARLAND - After a 1 hour and 49 minute lightening delay, the game was finally in session. The game looked like it was going to be a two-sided defensive affair as no team scored in the first quarter of play.
However, all changed on Garland's first possession of the second quarter. On 3rd and 8 from the 18 yard line, Jared Barnett connected with senior wide receiver Adrian Phillips on a beautiful 40 yard strike. Phillips hauled in the pass at the Centennial 45 yard line and proceeded to break 2 tackles as he crossed the 40. He never stopped and the 82 yard TD gave Garland the 6-0 lead with 8:29 remaining in the 2nd quarter. The point after try was blocked, but an offside call against the Patriots gave the Owls a second try. The kick from Eduardo Barajas was up and good giving Garland the 7-0 lead.

The following Patriot drive ended with a bang. Devin Brown jumped in front of an errant Davonte Black pass and returned it 39 yards down inside the Lakeview Centennial 3 yard line. Phillips carried the ball in on the next play for his second touchdown of the night. Garland led 14-0 at the 7:15 mark of the 2nd quarter.
Things continued to fall apart for Lakeview Centennial. On 4th and 9 deep inside their own territory, Lakeview Centennial's punt was blocked by Devin White and rolled out of bounds at the 23 yard line. Three plays later the Patriots returned the favor by intercepting a pass in the end zone where he opted to return it out of the end zone. Garland pursued and tackled him at the 1 yard line.
Forcing Lakeview Centennial to punt the ball, Phillips returned the punt down to the Patriot 32 yard line. On the ensuing play, Ayron Morgan quickly caught the pass on the right side and kicked it in 2nd gear down the sideline for the 32 yard score yielding Garland a 21-0 lead with 1:54 remaining in the 1st half.
The Owls continued to impress in the second half. On the opening kickoff of the half, Malcolm Robinson found a crease in the middle of the field and after eluding a couple defenders, he found his way into the end zone on a 92 yard kickoff return. Garland increased their lead to 28-0, seventeen seconds into the 3rd quarter.
The Patriots continued to struggle. After losing yards on 3 out of 4 plays; a false start, a loss of 1 on a run, a 10 yard loss on a sack, Garland took over on the Lakeview Centennial 34 yard line. From there the Owls continued their quick strike mentality and Phillips took over.
Four plays into the drive, Barnett connected with Phillips in the flat and raced down the right sideline for the 17 yard touchdown. Phillips ended the day with 3 touchdowns and Garland took a 35-0 lead with 7:36 to go in the 3rd quarter.
Garland added one more score with just over eight minutes remaining. Barajas nailed a 40 yard field goal, giving the Owls their eventual final score and the 38-0 win over Lakeview Centennial.
