Cedar Park and Leander, schools only four miles apart, have student athletes that grew up together, sharing their home games at famed A.C. Bible Stadium and playing in the last game at this venue. Demolition of the site will begin early this coming week in the reconstruction of a new field and stadium hoping to be complete by next fall.
The Cedar Park Timberwolves (6-4, 4-3) were led by the combination duo of Seniors, quarterback Drew Russo , and all everything tailback Dedrick McKnight came away with a hard fought 26-10 victory.
"We were really just connecting out there, and my offensive line was giving me all the time in the world," said Russo of his throws to McKnight.
McKnight, the leading rusher in District 16-5A with 1,302 yards, provided the spark on the ground and from the air. He ended up with 66 yards and one TD rushing. The bigger inpact came from his six receptions for 126 yards, catching key passes of 31 and 41 yards from Russo that lead to scoring drives.
After the win Cedar Park Head Coach Chris Ross commented about McKnight, "Against most teams, Dedrick might carry the ball 25-27 times game. Tonight we asked him to block, we asked him to carry the ball, even be a decoy at times, he doesn't care, he just wants to win... and being a tremendous, tremendous receiver,... with Drew throwing the ball like that, why not takes some shots down the field to him (McKnight)".
Leander (5-5, 3-4), losing its starting quarterback Taylor Ratcliff late in the 1st quarter with an ankle injury, could only manage a field goal near the end of the 1st, and a short 2 yard touchdown pass right before the half from backup sophomore QB Chase Keltgen to Ryan Atkin for the Lions only points of the night. Leander mustered most of its offensive production from its own superb running back Jon Henderson who came up with109 yards on ten carries.
Cedar Parks defense picked off three Lions' passes, one on the 1st offensive play of the night, which ended up leading to a one yard TD by Timberwolves RB Landon Dockery.
Drew Russo's evening consisted of completing 10 out of 18 passes for 172 yards. He had a 34 yard scamper for a TD, along with throwing a six yard beauty of a fade pass to WR Dylan Cox to round out his night.
Coach Ross praised his quarterback and opponent and team, "Drew Russo, his leadership ability, his unselfish attitude is just unbelievable. People don't understand or know what all his does for this football team."
"It was an excellent ballgame, Coach Gideon and his staff did a great job, just like we knew they would. Our District is good from top to bottom, Leander is a very good football team, one of the better teams we we've played all year, and its unbelievable to me that we won't both be going to the playoffs, and how about the heart of their kids, they did a super job not giving up after the Ratcliff (Lions QB) goes down...but, how about our guys?..you know we've had injuries, you name it, these guys have just fought and fought, they believed in each other, they believed in what we were doing, and there tenacity and their willingness to finish is why they are in the playoffs".
McKnight responded on he and his teams readiness for what lies ahead " We've been ready (for the playoffs), we've talked about getting to this point before the season even started, so here it is, and now we've got to show up"
With the win, Cedar Park will now face Houston Cypress Creek in the first round Saturday 11/15 at 2pm in Cypress @ Berry Center Stadium.
