Barone was a graduate assistant at A&M in 1993 with Sherman as A&M's OL coach
Barone was the both offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Wyoming (1997-99) and Houston (2000-02). He was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Texas State in 2003.
Former Brownwood, Texas standout Kirby Freeman has been granted a release from the University of Miami and confirmed to the Waco Tribune Herald that he plans to enroll at Baylor next month.
Under NCAA Division I transfer rules, Freeman would have to sit out a year. But since he already earned his bachelor's degree in sports administration last summer, he will petition the NCAA for a waiver to become immediately eligible for the 2008 season.
"I think there's a couple of things working in my favor," said Freeman, who threw for 1,311 yards and 12 touchdowns in his career at Miami. "I've obviously done my research, and it all depends on me finding a (master's) program at Baylor that they don't have at Miami. We found 14 different programs, and I've got it narrowed down to about six different departments that I'm searching through."
Steve Freeman, Kirby's dad and the Brownwood head coach, was the defensive coordinator under Briles for two seasons at Stephenville.
If his waiver is approved, Freeman would compete for the starting job this spring with returners Blake Szymanski, John David Weed and Tyler Beatty and incoming freshman Robert Griffin from Copperas Cove, who also will enroll in January.
