CARROLLTON -- Harvey Giddens ran for four touchdowns and 170 yards to lead Flower Mound Marcus (1-0) to a convincing 51-21 win over the Waxahachie Indians (0-1) in the finale of the second annual TheOldCoach.com Avery Air Kickoff Classicat Standridge Stadium.
The Marauders jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead behind a pair of big plays by Coppell transfer WR Jeff Smiley who on the first offensive play from scrimmage for Marcus broke loose for a 42 yard to set up Marcus deep in Waxahachie territory. Deion Sanders Jr. would cap the drive with an eight yard touchdown reception from sophomore QB Cole Erwin. After the MHS defense forced a Waxahachie punt, Smiley would break loose again for a big play this time scoring from 72 yards out for the 14-0 lead.
Waxahachie tried to make a game of it led by WR Terrance Hawkins who finished with 7 receptions for 130 yards and two touchdowns. WHS at one point in the second quarter had cut the Marcus edge to 21-14, but a pair of Giddens touchdown runs in the last three minutes of the half turned a close game into a rout at 34-14. The final score was set up by a key fumble recovery by the Marcus defense. Giddens final touchdown run from 36 yards out early in the third quarter sealed the game at 41-14 and essentially turned the rest of the game into a showcase for the backups.
Marcus which started 3-0 last year will look to improve to 2-0 next week as they host Grapevine. Waxahachie will make the short trip up I-35E and visit Kincaide Stadium to take on Dallas Carter.
In the first game of the day, Denton Guyer held on for a thrilling 24-21 win over Garland. The first game of the Classic took place on Friday which was won by Justin Northwest as they knocked off Carrollton Creekview 46-27.
