GARLAND - Junior running back Bryan Driskell ran for 172 yards and three touchdowns as the McKinney Boyd Broncos (7-2, 5-1) clinched a playoff spot with a 20-0 win over the Rowlett Eagles (5-4, 4-2) at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
A steady rain throughout the game limited both team's passing attacks, but Boyd's ground game was the difference as Rowlett was only able to manage 105 yards rushing on 41 carries, while the Broncos paced by Driskell's big night topped 230 yards rushing.
After an exchange of punts to open the game, Driskell would make his presence felt on special teams as he returned a Rowlett punt 64 yards to the Eagles' eight yard line setting up his first scoring run from two yards out. On the ensuing possession Rowlett would put together their best drive of the game on their ensuing possession but a fumble deep in Boyd territory would end the Rowlett scoring chance.
With 2:39 left in the first half, Driskell would get his second scoring run of the game from 20 yards out putting Boyd up 13-0 as the PAT failed. The second half didn't see too much action as neither team was willing to take many chances with the wet football. Rowlett's only real scoring chance went by the wayside as they missed a 50 yard field goal attempt with just under nine minutes remaining.
The Broncos would put the game out of reach on Driskell's third touchdown run on a 4th and six play from 39 yards out for the final tally of 20-0. McKinney Boyd will close out the regular season with a matchup at home against South Garland, while Rowlett (who clinched a playoff spot last week) takes on Garland Lakeview Centennial. It appears likely that Boyd will match up with current unbeaten Dallas Skyline in the bi-district round of the playoffs.
