KENNEDALE - The Kennedale Wildcats hosted the Crandall Pirates in both team's final tune up before the start of the 2014 season on Thursday night. The team's played a controlled portion with each team's first and second team offenses getting a set number of plays in before the teams played a live half of football.
Kennedale's defense started out very strong as on the first play from scrimmage sophomore LB Baron Browning got an interception and if it was a live action scenario he likely would have scored. Browning, who holds multiple FBS offers has the size of a free safety at the college level as a sophomore and could grow into a major force at outside linebacker. He plays an aggressive style and has tremendous instincts. The Wildcats aggressive blitzing defense gave Crandall's first offense major trouble in the first series of downs. Kennedale's first offense managed one score on a fourth and goal as Juwan Washington scored from a yard out.
The second offenses saw a little more action with Crandall getting a long touchdown pass, but Kennedale backup RB Derrick Williams showed the Wildcats have multiple ball carriers who can take it the distance as he broke off two long touchdown runs as Kennedale's second offense scored three times. The first team offenses came back out for one more series of scripted played and both teams collected a score each. Crandall junior WR Jordan Bryant made a sensational leaping grab over a Kennedale DB for the Pirates score, while Washington hauled in a short touchdown pass for the usually ground oriented Wildcats.
The team's then played a live half of football and for lack of a better term the live half was utterly dominated by Kennedale who "won" that portion of the scrimmage 34-7. Kennedale got two long touchdown runs from fullback Ronald Hayes along with a 72 yard touchdown run from wingback Cody Gillespie and Washngton added in a score as well. Kennedale in one portion of the live half had back to back one play touchdown drives as Gillespie scored on a 72 yard run and then Hayes scored from 73 yards out. Crandall got their one score late in the half on a ten yard touchdown run.
Both teams will open the 2014 season on the road as Crandall will travel to Brownsboro, while Kennedale visits Crowley.
