Class 3A Division II State Championship Preview
Carthage (13-2) vs. Coldspring (14-1) Friday 4:00pm Cowboys Stadium, Arlington:
Carthage pulled off what many consider a big upset with their 35-28 win over Brownwood, but when one really looks at that game its easy to see Carthage was no fluke.
Since getting all their bullets back in the gun, the Bulldogs have rolled. The defense led by LB Kendall Thompson and Edward Pope did just enough to slow the Brownwood offense down, including Pope's defense on the final play to prevent Brownwood from tying it.
The real story of the night was RB Hunter Holland who ran for 308 yards and two touchdowns on an amazing 37 carries.
Wide receiver Jalen Claiborne caught the go ahead touchdown late in the game and chipped in a long kickoff return to spur the Bulldogs.
Coldspring has quietly won 14 games in a row and despite the long streak the Trojans come into this game as heavy underdogs. Last week Coldspring knocked off previously unbeaten Wimberley 26-14 as Sherman Gilbert and Cody Cummings combined for over 400 yards of offense (357 on the ground) and all four Coldspring touchdowns.
Both teams feature a physical style of play and each team has plenty of speed, but Carthage being the two time defending champions has the experience when it comes to big games and I think their talent on the defensive side of the football makes a difference.
Matt's Pick: Carthage by 12
