Cedar Hill Bounces Back In a Big Way
MANSFIELD-- The Cedar Hill Longhorns (2-2, 1-0) quickly eliminated any doubts of a hangover as they scored on two fumble returns in the first half and cruised to a 49-14 win over the Mansfield Legacy Broncos (0-4, 0-1) in the District 5-5A opener for both schools at Newsome Stadium.
After allowing 53 points in a loss to Odessa Permian nearly two weeks ago, the Longhorns had ten days to prepare for the opener and the defense came out with a purpose. On the game's opening possession Derek Chase scored on a 26 yard fumble return and late in the first half David Harris scored on a 42 yard fumble return to help Cedar Hill race out to a 28-0 halftime advantage.

Cedar Hill's offense which had been on fire the past two games was a little sloppy on Thursday night as penalties and some missed assignments hurt the Longhorns. Cedar Hill did get a strong effort from their ground game as seven different ball carriers combined for 264 yards on the ground. Senior Johnathon Albercrombie led the way with 76 yards rushing and a pair of touchdown runs. Driphus Jackson was solid in the passing game throwing for 146 yards and a touchdown for Cedar Hill. Holding a 7-0 in the first quarter Jackson hooked up with a wide open Kelton Specks for a score and 14-0 lead.
Sophomore sensation Laquvionte Gonzalez got into the act with a sensational 32 yard scoring run, showing uncanny vision and acceleration in the secondary. That run put CHHS up 21-0, setting up the second fumble return and a 28-0 edge.
Legacy got a break to keep them within shouting distance right before halftime as a snap sailed over Cedar Hill punter Ryan Sparkman's head setting LHS up in the red zone. With twenty seconds left in the half QB Quinten Hasten scored on a two yard run to make it 28-7 at the half.
Albercrombie's two second half touchdowns ended any hopes of a second half rally and by the start of the fourth quarter it was 42-7 Longhorns. Jared Rayford added a fourth quarter touchdown run to end the CHHS scoring at 49.
DeCarlos Humphrey was the lone bright spot for the Mansfield Legacy offense as he totaled 219 yards on the ground, including an 80 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Next week Cedar Hill will travel back to Newsome Stadium to take on Mansfield Timberview, while Mansfield Legacy will visit Grand Prairie.
