Garcia opened the scoring in the first quarter with runs of 23 and 46 yards to give Alvin a quick 14-0 advantage, Memorial fought back to cut the lead to 21-16 by halftime as the Mavericks were led by WR Nicholas Fuselier who hauled in six passes for 165 yards and three touchdowns.
Leading 28-23 in the third quarter, Alvin began to pull away as Garcia scored on a third touchdown run to make it 35-23. After forcing a Memorial punt, Alvin grabbed a 42-23 advantage as Gunner Olszewski returned a punt 80 yards to the house and AHS looked to have the game put away. Memorial, despite being winless kept fighting and Fuselier would haul in a another TD from Israel Trevino to make it 42-30, Jacob Zapata would score on a 70 yard pass from Trevino (who finished with four TD passes) with less than a minute remaining to give Memorial a shot at an onside kick late. The kick was recovered by Alvin and the Yellowjackets would kneel the ball three times and hang on for the win.
Defense Paces The Woodlands in Saturday Night Showdown
SHENANDOAH- The Woodlands Highlanders (5-1, 2-0) may have a quarterback "controversy" but if their defense shows up big like Saturday night it may not matter as they knocked off the previously undefeated Humble Atascocita Eagles (5-1, 1-1) 24-14 at Woodforest Bank Stadium.
Starter Matt Bonaguidi played the first half and although he staked the Highlanders out to a 17-7 halftime lead and threw a pair of touchdown passes, he also threw three interceptions. TWHS HC Mark Schmid made a chance and put in last year's starter Chris Andritos and although his numbers weren't as good he did take care of the ball as The Woodlands didn't turn the football over and that was the key.
Atascocita jumped out to a quick 7-0 advantage as QB Niyl Campbell scored on a 25 yard scamper to put AHS up 7-0. Atascocita got an interception and moved to midfield on their next drive but TWHS saw their defense bow up and stop AHS on 4th and 1 and completely turn the game's momentum. The Woodlands would score on their next two possessions as Bonaguidi hooked up with Kalif Johnson for a 50 yard touchdown pass and then Chris Bell from 20 yards out to make it 14-7 Highlanders. Nacho Garcia would add a short field goal and give the Highlanders a 17-7 lead at the half.
Atascocita would cut the lead to 17-14 halfway through the third quarter as Deneric Gibson would score on a short touchdown run, but the Eagles just couldn't get over the hump. After a bad snap on a punt by The Woodlands, Atascocita was unable to take the lead, despite taking over on The Woodlands 30. Atascocita was able to pin the Highlanders on their own three after a 63 yard punt, but on the first play of the ensuing drive RB Patrick Carr would rip off a 49 yard run to flip the field for The Woodlands. A few plays later the Highlanders would put the nail in the coffin as Bell caught a short hitch route from Andritos, broke a tackle and scored on a 41 yard touchdown pass for the final margin of 24-14. Atascocita would have the ball two other times, but they were simply unable to threaten for any scoring chances.
