Abilene stunned three-time defending Class 5A state champ Southlake Carroll, 22-21, Saturday afternoon at Texas Stadium

Carroll, which has won four titles in the last five years, appeared on the verge of kicking a game-winning 28-yard field goal with eight seconds left.
But Southlake Carroll lost a fumble on a rare center snap to backup junior quarterback Kyle Padron, who entered in the first half after senior quarterback Riley Dodge suffered a season-ending injury with a second degree separated shoulder. Carroll tried to spike the ball but did so from center instead of its Shotgun Formation.
Abilene got a standout performance from senior quarterback Spens Lackey, who scored the go-ahead touchdown with six minutes left.
Abilene was ousted in 2004 and 2005 by Southlake on the Dragons' state championship runs. Abilene lost to DeSoto in 2006.
The Dragons had a 58-game winning streak against Texas teams.
Carroll (11-2), which had a 49-consecutive game winning streak snapped in a loss to Miami Northwestern earlier this season, hadn't lost to a Texas team since falling to Katy 16-15 in the 2003 5A Division II championship game.
The Dragons won back-to-back 5A Division II titles in 2004-05 and won the 5A Division I championship last season. They also won the 5A Division II title in 2002.
The Warbirds have rebounded from losing their status as the top team in District 3-4A as Odessa Permian beat Abilene for the first time in nearly a decade this year.
Permian was ousted by Euless Trinity on Saturday afternoon.
